Kraft Paper Bags vs Plastic: What QSR Brands Need to Know

Food brands around the world are moving from plastic carry bags to paper. The change is driven by regulations, customer expectations, and the simple fact that a well-printed paper bag builds your brand while a plastic bag does not. This guide compares the two on the points that matter to restaurants and takeaway brands, and explains what to look for when ordering custom paper bags.

1. Strength and Practical Limits

Modern kraft paper bags are much stronger than people assume. A standard 70 to 90 gsm kraft bag can carry a light meal; 120 to 150 gsm bags handle heavier loads with ease. The real limit is moisture. Paper bags do not like liquids, so pair them with a food-safe liner or sealed packaging for soups, sauces, and drinks. Plastic bags win on waterproofing, but paper bags win on everything customers can see and feel.

2. Handle Options and Carry Comfort

Flat rope handles, twisted paper handles, and cotton handles are the three common choices. Flat handles are the most economical and print-friendly. Twisted paper handles look more premium and are stronger for heavier orders. Cotton handles feel the most luxurious and are often used for retail and gifting. Choose the handle based on the average weight of the order and the brand image you want to project.

3. Printing and Brand Visibility

A paper bag is a walking billboard. Full-color offset printing on kraft allows logos, illustrations, and QR codes to the food delivery menu or social pages. White-coated bags print brighter and more vivid colors than raw kraft, while raw kraft keeps the natural eco look. If you run delivery, put your brand name and handles on both sides so the bag is recognizable on the street and in photos.

4. Cost and Sustainability

Paper bags cost more than basic plastic bags, but the gap narrows when you count printing, brand impact, and regulatory risk. More markets are restricting single-use plastic carry bags, and switching early avoids disruption later. Paper is recyclable, and using FSC-certified paper or recycled content strengthens your sustainability story. Customers increasingly notice packaging, and paper reads as a deliberate, premium choice.

5. Sizing and Ordering

Measure your largest typical order, add room for the handles and the top fold, and choose from small, medium, and large standards or order custom dimensions. Before bulk production, request a sample to test strength, handle attachment, and print quality. Custom printed paper bags are produced in days to a few weeks depending on quantity and finishing. Our factory prints and finishes paper bags in-house, from offset printing to lamination and die-cutting, so colors stay consistent across orders.
